As part of National Biodiversity Week Ireland 2025, we have a wonderful lineup of free events designed to engage and inspire nature lovers of all ages. From interesting film screenings to hands-on workshops and guided walks, there’s something for everyone to discover the amazing biodiversity that surrounds us. We warmly invite you to join us:
CLOUGHJORDAN CINECLUB – Film Screening ‘My Wild Garden’
Thomas MacDonagh Museum, Cloughjordan at 7:30pm – Sunday 18th May
Experience the captivating world of wildlife through the lens of Colin Stafford-Johnson in a screening of his documentary film. Discover how Colin has transformed his own cherished garden into a thriving sanctuary for biodiversity.
THE THEORY AND PRACTICE OF HOME COMPOSTING – With Mike Holden
Nenagh Library at 6:45pm – Tuesday 20th May
Discover the world of home composting with Mike Holden! His talk, featuring PowerPoint examples of different systems, will guide you through potential challenges and how to overcome them. Come prepared to ask questions and share your own composting journeys. Mike will also have practical demonstrations with composting tools, finished compost, and a live wormery.
BIRDWATCHING ON A DUSK CHORUS WALK – With Jemima Turner
Cuan Beo* at 8:00pm – Tuesday 20th May
Immerse yourself in the evening sounds of nature on a Birdwatching Dusk Chorus Walk led by Jemima Turner. This experience combines an introductory session on birdwatching with a peaceful walk through Cloughjordan Ecovillage, focusing on listening to and identifying the birds’ beautiful chorus.
MEET THE BUTTERFLIES – With Rachel Vaughan and Brendan Sheehan
Cuan Beo* at 2:30pm – Thursday 22nd May
Learn about Ireland’s Butterfly Monitoring Scheme and the butterflies you might spot around Cloughjordan. Rachel Vaughan and Brendan Sheehan will begin with an introductory talk before leading a walk through Cloughjordan Ecovillage (weather permitting) to find and identify them.
PRESERVING DARK SKIES TO SAFEGUARD BIODIVERSITY – With John Flannery
Thomas MacDonagh Museum, Cloughjordan at 8:00pm – Saturday 24th May
Learn about the consequences of light pollution for biodiversity in a dedicated slideshow and then join astronomer John Flannery for a guided sky viewing experience. With VIcki Moore, Gemma Brugha and Astronomer John Flannery
FAMILY FUN: EXPLORING BIODIVERSITY THROUGH NATURE CRAFTING
Cuan Beo* at 2:00pm – Sunday 25th May
Nature Crafting Fun (Ages 6-10, Siblings Welcome): Inspired by forest school techniques, children and their accompanying adults will explore the natural world through hands-on crafting and take home their unique creations.
* Cuan Beo – Enter the Ecovillage at the back entrance on the Step Road, walk straight ahead through the gate, Cuan Beo is on your right.
Children must be accompanied by adults to all events.
All events are free to attend, no booking required.
