Community Apple Festival

Féile na nÚll, the annual community apple festival will be held in Cloughjordan Ecovillage on Friday 23 and Saturday 24 September.

We kick off on the evening of Friday 23 September 8:00pm at WeCreate Workplace with a Culture Night event Illuminating Regenerative Cultures, an opportunity to find out what goes on in WeCreate Workspace and hear the stories of the different initiatives based there with music and spoken word woven throughout.

On Saturday 24 September 1:00pm, join us for a ‘Taste of Cloughjordan Ecovillage’ with market and food stalls, talks, kids activities and tours of the Ecovillage. Be sure to bring your apples for pressing and enter your apple recipes in the Apple Bake contest.

Part of Culture Night 2022, a national moment, celebrating culture, creativity and the arts and seeks to actively promote the belief that this rich and varied culture is alive, treasured and nurtured in people’s lives, today and every day.

APPLE PRESSING I MARKET AND FOOD STALLS I TOURS AND TALKS | KIDS ACTIVITIES AND APPLE BAKE CONTEST

A celebration of apples and community, with market and food stalls, talks, tours of the Ecovillage and kids activities. Be sure to bring your apples for pressing and enter your apple recipes in the Apple Bake contest.

Market and Food Stalls and Apple Pressing  – Bring your apples for pressing with the Night Orchard. The Night Orchard produce apple juice exclusively from apples gathered from various small orchards in the local area, and offer apple pressing days during the season.

Games (Giant Jenga and Connect 4 Resilience)

Opening Apple Bake Contest: Submissions – Bring your bake to WeCreate from 1:00pm – 3:00pm. Three categories –  a. Under 15s b. Home Bakers  c. Some Professional Experience’. The announcement of the winners takes place at 5:00pm.

1.30pmOpening Welcome – Introduction to the Ecovillage and its Ecosystem.

Your Local Food Hub – Short presentation on the North Tipperary Online Farmers Market, a community-led initiative enabling access to local produce through an open-source digital farmersmarket platform.

Community Seed Bank Talk – Heritage Apples – Cuan Beo

RED Gardens Tour –  A visit to the RED Gardens with Kris Lomas. Based on the explorations and discoveries of a series of food growing spaces, located in the Cloughjordan Ecovillage. (RED Gardens)

WeCreate Fab Lab – An opportunity to see the Digital Fabrication Laboratory and find out what can be made here. (Fab Lab)

Dark Skies – Find out about our proposed lighting scheme developed to enhance the night-time experience of the site whilst meeting a set of ambitious sustainability goals to protect the nocturnal ecology and biodiversity. (Food Hub Upstairs)

3:00pm

Ecovillage Tour – Guided tour of Cloughjordan Ecovillage led by Ecovillage members, explore how we can live sustainably, without damaging or disrupting local ecosystems. (Departing from WeCreate)

3:30pm

Community Climate Coaches Talk – Community Climate Coaches is an exciting Europe wide partnership which aims to develop a system to train, support and enable Community Climate Coaches (CCC) across Europe, introduced by Davie Philip. (WeCreate Upstairs)

4.30pm  

The Apple Orchard Walk – Over 60 regional varieties of apple trees grow in the nursery.  We planted thousands of trees grafted in the nursery throughout the estate in 2012. Various varieties of herbs and fruit bushes complement the community’s edible landscape plan. Walk with Cloughjordan Ecovillage Land Use Group.

‘From Apples to Global Economics: Climate change is forcing us to think the unthinkable’ – Talk with Peadar Kirby Professor Emeritus of International Politics and Public Policy, University of Limerick. (WeCreate Upstairs)

5:00pm

Results of the Apple Bake Contest – Announcement of the winners of the three categories. (Food Hub) 

5.30pm – Closing Celebration (Food Hub)

Labyrinth Walk –  Join Mary Meighan for a guided walk of our 7 Circuit Celtic Labyrinth. Labyrinths are part of our ancient yet living traditions. (Departing from WeCreate)
